WHAT MAKES A GREAT AERIAL IMAGE?
We will hear from Cameron Davidson, the award-winning and published aerial photographer, and Steve Bussmann, premier helicopter pilot and helicopter service owner.
About Cameron Davidson: I shoot aerials. I shoot people. I've shot around the world: Aerials of landscapes for advertising campaigns, offshore gas platforms for annual reports and natural disasters for magazine stories are just a few of the subjects I have photographed from the air. When not harnessed into the back of a turbine helicopter, I photograph real people on location for a healthy mix of ad, annual report and editorial clients. I am a pilot but never fly myself for my aerial work. Virginia is my home. I share my house with Marlita, a gigantic Catahoula Leopard Dog whose goal in life is to harass but never catch the squirrels in my backyard. I shoot with the Canon 1Ds Mark III and Medium Format Digital. I have a fondness for Leica M cameras, Rollei TLR’s and an ancient Crown Graphic. I am on the board of a group whose focus is to help the people in a small Haitian community. I travel to Haiti at least once a year. I like pre-TAG Heur watches and even older Omegas. Five books of my photography have been published with another two on the way. Three international airports are within an hours drive of my home.
About Steve Bussman: Based in the Washington DC metropolitan area, HeloFlights is in the business of providing the region with the ideal helicopter platform to match your specific mission requirements including aerial photography (print, video, thermal and film), flight instruction, location scouting, equipment testing, surveying, observation, powerline & pipeline patrol, frost prevention, field drying, and cargo transportation. Based at the Manassas Regional airport in Northern Virginia, HeloFlights is located just minutes from the Dulles corridor. Bussmann Aviation has selected the versatile MD500 series of turbine-powered helicopters as our platform of choice. The MD500 is a four place aircraft with a top speed of 150 mph and cruise range of 250 miles. Our primary aircraft has been especially configured for photographic missions and includes easily removable windows for unobstructed shots. The four bladed, fully articulated & isolated rotor system is an industry leader in providing stable, vibration free platform performance, which means you get the shots you need. The executive interior features plush seating, carpeted floors, plus a voice activated intercom ...and every passenger has a window seat! Bussmann Aviation prides itself on providing experienced pilots who are very familiar with the local geography. Our aircraft are equipped with dual moving map GPS navigation systems, which makes locating your particular site a breeze. Economical demo rides and gift certificates are also available, feel free to contact us for details.COPYRIGHT, ORPHAN WORKS & LEGAL MATTERS
Keith Barraclough, Vice Chair of the Advertising Photographers of America DC
About Keith Barraclough and his photography: I try not to bring too much that might alter the scene. Leaving it alone - letting it just happen can, at times, make the best photograph. This doesn't mean that I don't influence what's in front of the camera - it's just subtle. Sometimes less is more... Work Ethic: I'm very motivated by personal work. I love pushing myself. Reaching an impasse and taking it a step further - seeing differently, getting reactions. Style: "A kind of basic, calm realism". I'm not interested in having something that looks set up, propped or fake - it just doesn't seem right to me. It's all about the reaction, the movement, the angle. It's the idea, the concept that counts. I'm an Embassy brat. Traveling around the world has kept things somewhat real for me. As my mother taught me, sometimes the simplest way is the best approach. I like to say "here's the photo, you be the judge." Influence: Believe it or not it's my two dogs. Always happy, never angry and very curious. Constantly trying to find new ways to do things.SELLING STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY
Jim Pickerell wrote “THE BOOK” on stock photography.
About Jim Pickerell: Jim began his career in 1963 as a freelance photojournalist in the Far East. His first major sale, a Life Magazine cover, was a stock photo of the overthrow of the Ngo Dinh Diem government in Saigon, Vietnam. He spent the next ten to fifteen years focusing on assignment work, first as an editorial photographer, and later in the corporate area. He regularly filed his outtakes with several stock agencies around the world. As the stock side of his income grew, Jim studied the needs of the stock photo market, and began to devote more of his shooting time to producing stock images. At about this time the 1976 change in the copyright law went into effect, and the industry began to see rapidly growing demand by commercial and advertising users for stock images. In the early 80's he helped establish the Mid-Atlantic chapter of American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and served as Vice President, President and Program Chairman over a period of six years. He served on the national board of ASMP for two years, was on the committee that produced the ASMP Stock Handbook in 1983, and was active in the fight to reverse the IRS rules that required capitalization of all expenses of stock photo production. In 1989 he published the first edition of Negotiating Stock Photo Prices, a guide to pricing hundreds of stock photo uses. The fifth edition was published in 2001. In 1990, he began publishing Selling Stock, (originally Taking Stock) a bi-monthly newsletter dealing with issues of interest to stock photographers and stock photo sellers, with particular focus on issues related to marketing stock images. Selling Stock now has daily on-line updates and is recognized worldwide as a leading source of in-depth analysis of the stock photo industry. As a result of his many years in the industry and his work with Selling Stock, Jim has an expert understanding of the stock industry, its standard practices and developing trends. He frequently provides consulting services on stock industry issues to photographers, stock agents and individuals in the investment community. In 1993, his daughter, Cheryl, joined him in the business. Together they established Stock Connection, an agency designed to provide photographers with greater control over the promotion and marketing of their work than most other stock agencies were offering. The company currently represents selected images from more than 400 photographers. At age 71, Jim is still excited by the challenges of the Stock Photo Industry and expects to be participating in the marketing of stock photography, and advising stock photographers, far into the future.
